Welcome to our new Web site!

As you've discovered, our move into the 21st century (just a little bit late, right?) is allowing us to implement a number of new features and services, one of which is before your eyes. This space is intended to give you — a regular reader, a prospective staffer or a curious alum — a peek behind the scenes at what goes into the 12- to 20-page paper you can pick up each day or browse online.

If you check in here regularly, you'll find 2-3 new posts per week on topics ranging from how The Cavalier Daily chooses which topics find their way into print to how our writers and designers are supported by the often under-appreciated work of our advertising and IT staffs. If there's a topic you're itching to learn more about, just shoot an e-mail to meditor@cavalierdaily.com or leave a comment here at any time. Within the next week or so, we'll have a Cavalier Daily FAQs page up and running for your convenience.

Until next time, enjoy the new site! Your thoughts about it are welcome here or can be sent to webmaster@cavalierdaily.com.

Okay... I remember you had a HUGE archive of comics (along with the rest of the paper) stretching back to at LEAST 2001. Is that coming back, or has that been discarded?

Don't worry - the archives will return. Transitioning all of our old information over to the site is proving to be a bigger task than expected, but we are working to have all of that material available ASAP.

"A bigger task than expected" is a phrase I understand completely as a programmer.

I was just concerned; I had many links to the Cavalier Daily comic archives on a website I made for the Coach Random comic strip (a task for which I got Mr. Scott Ruhl's blessing).

Good news...and love the new site! Now that the website has vaulted to the 21st Century, why not keep the archive to the 21st Century as well...10 years max? No reason for information overload. Thx

2001 Archives? I was like 10 years old in 2001. Keep up the good work but please remain focused on the journalistic needs of the majority of your current readers: my classmates.
Ciao,

I recommend requiring users to Login for access to the content (photo archives, comics, etc.) to increase registration numbers. Good luck!

Initialman:
Previous editions are available starting with the FULL 1999-2000 academic calendar year. Click Previous Issue on the CD homepage and adjust the date you want in the address bar. Happy hunting.

Great site. Can you include William & Mary's student newspaper (The Flat Hat) on your "Other Weeklies" page? A little shout out for TJ's alma mater (Class of 1762). By the way, Flat Hat archives go back 3 years, to 2006, but no comics section :)

Unfortunately we do not link to other news sites; the "Other Weeklies" page is intended for The Cavalier Daily's weekly sections that do not have their own page -- such as Focus, Gameday, etc. (Obviously this page is still under development.) Sorry!

i'm w/ the taxman...my vote is for quality over quantity any day. Too many old articles on the last site made it very difficult to search. My 2 cents...

Digitize every last word...all the way back to 1819! Just kidding. Thanks for adding the social networking features...facebook rules.
MJ - and I was 13 years old in 2001 :)

Kristen at the CD,
Interesting thread. I personally don't care how dated your archives are, but please just make sure you have articles for a full academic calendar year available (for example, Fall 2003-Spring 2004, Fall 2004-Spring 2005, etc, etc.). A lot of Spring semester stories make reference to preceding Fall semester events, so it's nice to have continuity across an entire academic year.
Thanks,
Cav

cavman,
great point...didn't think about that. spring stories w/out the prior fall ones seems a bit odd.

Even if the archives only went back to the beginning of the 21st Century, it would be okay for me, since the links on my site only go back to 2001 anyway.

Any pre-2K archives are just completely unnecessary and cumulative. Our generation is focused on the here and now so let's focus our attention and resources on news and current events. Thanks.

cavman,
indeed...full academic years (fall and corresponding spring) seems logical to me...go hoos.

Being totally focused on the here and now can be a mistake. It is interesting to look back and see what times were like yesterday. We cannot imagine that the world came into being last night, or we'll never learn.
